چکیده

We report the detection of the 3 P1→ 3 P0 fine-structure line of neutral carbon in the z = 4.12 quasar PSS 2322+1944, obtained at the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. The [Ci] 3 P1 − 3 P0 line is detected with a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼ 6 with a peak intensity of ≈ 2.5 mJy and a velocity-integrated line flux of 0.81 ± 0.12 Jy km s −1. Assuming an excitation temperature of 43 K (equal to the dust temperature), we derive a mass of neutral carbon (corrected for magnification) of MCI ≈ 1.2 × 10 7 M⊙. In PSS 2322+1944, the cooling due to C is about 6 times smaller than for CO, whereas the CO and C cooling represents ≈ 10 −4 of the far-infrared continuum and more than half of the cooling due to C + .

Astronomy & Astrophysics CO and Dust in PSS 2322 + 1944 at a redshift of 4 . 12

Using the IRAM interferometer we have detected J = 4→3 and 5→4 CO line emission toward the radio quiet quasar PSS 2322+1944. At a redshift of zCO = 4.1199 this is the fourth and strongest detection of CO at z > 4. The velocity-integrated CO J = 4→3 and J = 5→4 line fluxes are 4.21 ± 0.40 and 3.74 ± 0.56 Jy km s−1, and the linewidth is ≈300 kms−1. The CO J = 10→9 was searched for but not detecte...

Micron Dust Emission from High Redshift Quasars

We report detections of six high-redshift (1.8 ≤ z ≤ 6.4), optically luminous, radio-quiet quasars at 350 μm, using the SHARC II bolometer camera at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Our observations double the number of high-redshift quasars for which 350 μm photometry is available. By combining the 350 μm measurements with observations at other submillimeter/millimeter wavelengths, for e...

A Molecular Einstein Ring at Z=4.12: Imaging the Dynamics of a Quasar Host Galaxy through a Cosmic Lens

We present high-resolution (0.3) Very Large Array (VLA) imaging of the molecular gas in the host galaxy of the high redshift quasar PSS J2322+1944 (z = 4.12). These observations confirm that the molecular gas (CO) in the host galaxy of this quasar is lensed into a full Einstein ring, and reveal the internal dynamics of the molecular gas in this system. The ring has a diameter of ∼1.5′′, and thu...

Co(1–0) in Z&4 Quasar Host Galaxies: No Evidence for Extended Molecular Gas Reservoirs

We present CO(J=1→0) observations of the high–redshift quasi–stellar objects (QSOs) BR12020725 (z = 4.69), PSSJ2322+1944 (z = 4.12), and APM08279+5255 (z = 3.91) using the NRAO Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the MPIfR Effelsberg 100m telescope. We detect, for the first time, the CO ground–level transition in BR1202-0725. For PSS J2322+1944 and APM08279+5255, our observations result in line flux...
